For many years in history, herbal remedies have been used successfully to treat many conditions, including loss of hair. Herbal medicine contain vitamins and minerals that tend to work together to correct different conditions. Herbal treatment for loss of hair has been practiced around the world for many years. There are many sources from where the remedy for hair loss can be extracted. Some of the various sources include:
Ginkgo biloba- this has been extensively used and is very popular as a remedy for losing hair. This herb is thought to improve blood flow to the brain and the skin. This increase in blood flow results to increase in delivery of nutrients to the brain area and to the hair follicles, which promotes hair growth. Stinging nettle- this works as a protective measure for hair loss by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT. Saw palmetto- this is contained as a core component of many commercially prepared herbal treatment products for hair loss. It is recommended by men and it is currently extensively used. It protects the prostate, slow loss of hair and encourages recovery from baldness. Dong Quai (Angelica) – this is commonly used in China by both men and women as herbal treatment for hair loss. Phytoestrogens in the herb decreases the production of DTH. Its effectiveness can be increased when used together with nettle root. Red pepper- this is applied directly to the scalp to serve as a skin irritant that promotes production of histamine. The cells around the scalp are stimulated improving blood flow around the scalp area thus promoting hair regrowth. Aloe vera- an enzyme, superoxide dismutase found in the gel has the ability both to trigger the formation of nitric oxide as well as stimulation of hair growth in people who have male pattern baldness. Aloe vera has been extensively used by Indians in South America. The gel is applied into the hair and scalp every night. Green tea – this is one of the best researched treatments for loss of hair. It is inspired by the realization that Japanese who take more of the green tea have less falling hair. It originates from China but is also popular in Japan and the rest of Asia. The active ingredients include catechins and alkaloids. These have the potential to improve skin formation including hair loss due the high levels of antioxidants.
As a general principle, these natural remedies have the benefit of being 100% biodegradable. This means that you are not likely to experience side effects even after a long term use. They can also be used even without a doctor’s prescription and therefore effective in preventing hair loss. You can also take most of these natural remedies as part of food. The non-dose compliance problem that is associated with taking of medication is therefore not a problem. This allows for better success rate in hair loss treatment. Natural therapies are therefore more preferred.
