Genetics, the unstoppable force. And so it is that at the ripe old age of 22 my hair is starting to fall out. Slaphead. Baldie. Stock photos of eggs. Wax-and-shine.

For some, I imagine this would be the end of their world. People often place a lot of value in their hair. Luckily, I never did. Buzzcuts through childhood, first at the Greek Cypriot-run place on West Green Road, then at home. Then a fleeting skin-headed period, followed by 4 years of the stuff reaching halfway down my back, which took me up to my 22nd birthday. Maintenance didn’t really come into it, hair at best being an insulator, at worst an extra 5-10 minutes in the shower every morning, the final dry-off taking place courtesy of standing by the door between the Victoria Line carriages on the way to college.

I suppose, paradoxically, that will have to change now. The next stage will be the skinhead stage, which will require a weekly run over with a razor. A brave new world awaits..
