Why do people become vegetarians?

It’s not like sheep or cows are endangered or anything. They were made to be eaten, and are farmed to be eaten. Uggs are not made by skinning sheep alive, they kill the sheep humanely, use the hair, the skin, and eat the insides, and sometimes use the feet to to make products like jello and the like.
My question is, why do people become vegetarians? I’m not against them or anything, but in my society, people just become vegetarian to become “cool” or improve their reputation. I heard that vegetarians are slowly losing brain cells because they have vitamin deficits…
here’s a similar study for memory loss and vegetarians: http://forums.prevention.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/7431019183/m/4881093405
but what I don’t understand is that if we have an overpopulation of sheep and cows and pigs anyway, and being vegetarian is actually hurting people, what’s the point??
if you like, you can answer these questions:
1. is eating a steak the same as carrying a leather handbag?
2. do you believe that you’re helping the world by becoming a vegan/vegetarian?
3. if being vegan or vegetarian was illegal, would you still eat meat?
4. do you believe that God put animals on the earth for us to eat?
i wasn’t being judgmental, i was just asking why. and FYI to the last answer, i believe that animals should be killed humanely if they’re going to be killed. my family and many other families do not eat McDonalds. did you know that the dominican republic outlawed McDonalds?

people have lots of reasons for becommin vegetarians ♥ i became a vegetarian for health reasons, an i lost 29 pounds, an i dunt get seck like i used to. plas soem people dunt eat right, cause u can eat chips and cookies an be a vegetarian, but i do it the right way, weth whole grains, soy, multivitamins, fruits an veggies an everee theng
soem people are vegetarians for ethical reasons, but its their choice, an people shudnt bug them bout it, an they shudnt bug other people bout it.
1. is eating a steak the same as carrying a leather handbag? yah acause it is usin animal bi product
2. do you believe that you’re helping the world by becoming a vegan/vegetarian? im a vegetarian for health reasons. i know that pigs are breed so much for food that their feces are polluting the oceans, but i never lieked pork aneyway.
3. if being vegan or vegetarian was illegal, would you still eat meat? no, im a vegetarian for health reasons.
4. do you believe that God put animals on the earth for us to eat? i thenk God wants us to treat animals humanly, and treat them humanly when we use them for food an clothing too ♥
yah plas animals people eat are onlee overpopulated ’cause they are breed to be eaten so much. people onlee eat a few cuts these days, liek steak, not liver or kidneys, and they eat more meat then they used to. so now, instead of liver, kidney an steak one week, people eat steak, steak an steak, so more cows have to be breed. plus along weth fast food restaurants, came the factorization of livestock, they are pumped weth growth hormones, and breed in close, diseased quarters. so the health quality if meat is going down, the variety of the cuts of meats are declining, and people are eating so much meat opposed to meat, fruits, veggies an grains all in a balanced diet together. Plus the animals produce so much feces, that they are polluting the ocean. i thenk its a bigger problem than vegetarianism. cuase people will always eat meat, an thats okay, but they gotta be healthy about it, as well as ethical to the animals ♥
I’m sorry, but your question makes a lot of assumptions about vegetarians.
First, not everyone becomes vegetarian to be “cool.” I wasn’t even aware that it was cool. It’s just a lifestyle choice. Also, for millions of people in the world, it’s a religious belief. Many religions who believe in reincarnation (Hinduism, Jainism, etc.) believe that the human soul returns repeatedly to earth, and therefore do not eat meat because they believe that animals have a soul that can, through many cycles through life, eventually become human. Does that make Hinduism “cool”?
Oh, and you say that vegetarians are loosing brain cells. Where do you learn this stuff? Two points: (1) many omnivorous do not get enough vitamins – the American diet is heavily focused on processed and prepackaged food, including fast foods, which are not nutritionally balanced and are a leading cause of the obesity problem in the country. Are you suggesting that vegetarians, by incorporating more fruits and vegetables in to their diet, are some how worse off than the average American who eats at McDonald’s? (2) Some vegetarians do not make the effort to properly balance their diet, and therefore probably do have vitamin deficiencies. But that is a small number. Saying that a vitamin deficiency is proof of a poor diet goes against your argument, as it also proves that the average American omnivorous diet is inadequate – not just because of the fast food/prepackaged food issue, but if the diet is so great, than why do so many people take multivitamins? Could it be because eating meat and fish doesn’t give them enough vitamins?
But to get to your questions:
1. Eating a steak and carrying a leather handbag are the same thing in the sense that an animal was killed to produce the final product. I know you like to think that one animal is used to make leather goods, produce food, whatever. That’s not true. Animals used for meat are too mistreated to be any good for producing leather – the hides are practically useless, because the animals are fed a poor diet, and the method of killing marks up the hide. So it’s completely different animals, raised different ways, to make the products.
Oh, and by the way, even if the animals aren’t skinned alive, I wouldn’t call electrocution through the anus, or having your neck snapped, or having your throat slit humane – unless one of them is the way YOU were planning on dying, or how you would like your parents or children to die. Personally, I’d prefer none of my family members ever have to be electrocuted to death.
2. This is an argument of “environmental vegetarians,” which not all vegetarians are. Global warming has only been considered a serious issue for about the past 10 years, and vegetarians have been around forever. But, since you asked:
“According to a study done by the University of Chicago and reprinted in Time magazine, switching from a meat-eating diet to vegetarianism reduces one carbon footprint by 1.4 times the amount of switching from a Toyota Camry to a Hybrid car. This is because of the vast amount of methane that is put into the air from overbreeding for consumption, methane being a 32% more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Shipment of the grain and the cattle itself also plays a part in this issue, being that it takes 8 pounds of grain to get 1 pound of meat.” – Wikipedia
3. This is a silly hypothetical and you worded it wrong.
4. No.
Most vegetarians are open to other people’s lifestyle. None of my friends are vegetarian, and neither is my boyfriend. They all eat meat in my presence all the time and I really don’t care – I’ve made my choice, and they made theirs. Maybe you shouldn’t judge people just because they don’t want to eat the same things you eat.
first of all, i chuckles at your “they kill them humanely”
sad sad girl, have you ever watched the documentary “EARTHLINGS”
watch it ! it shows how “humane” they slaughter animals !!!
second of all, the article on the prevention site doesn’t mean that all vegans eat tofu, i never ate tofu, because it’s still a processed food
third of all, humans are animals and so are we overpopulating the earth too, but that doesn’t mean that we should eat each other
questions
1- eating a steak is not the same things as a leather bag
2- i am helping MYSELF, it’s too overwhelming to help the entire world you know…
3. no i still will not eat meat, and outlaw veganism , i’m a fruitarian =]
4- oh please god is irrational, you can say everything is god honey, give me a better argument
“god” put animals on earth, but as you can recall from your bible, torah, or quran, “adam” and “eve” were in heaven eating fruits and vegetables =]
oh and FYI you can eat anything you desire, it’s your body, not mine
“you are what you eat” – a native american proverb
and why not try it out, eat fruits for a week, only and solely fruits
no bread, chocholate, pizza, tofu, cereal or any of that rubbish
-3 apples a day
-1 banana a day
-1 watermelon [ will last you about a week] [ cover it to preserve it]
-try to make smoothies if you don’t like to chew
-go to your local grocery store and check out what kind of fruits they have, get organic, not ones sprayed with Pesticides
and trust me, your body will love you for doing so.
just for a week!
and for me, i am a fruitarian because since i was a child, we always had a big dish filled with fruits, it was never empty, and for me, fruits were such a great snack.
and no i’m not an animal person, i don’t like animals, but that doesn’t mean you can kill them and treat them like they have no life in them.
that’s psychotic.
Hope that helped!

Because they Don’t know how to Hunt !
Either for their health, or they love animals, and can’t bear to think of the inhumane way they’re slaughtered, and sometimes raised. Eating a lot of meat isn’t the healthiest thing for a person. (please note, I did say ‘a lot’). But, have you ever seen how the animals are treated and slaughtered? If you care anything about animals, it would make you sick. Give me a moment, and I’ll find a video that I saw about pigs. Yahoo! featured it on their homepage.
I’m not saying it’s wrong to eat meat, BUT, there’s a more humane way to do it. Unfortunately, that’s not what’s happening. Watch this video – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRKNrLUxG2U
And to answer question 4-
I believe God originally gave us plants to eat. The Bibile does say, in Genesis 1:29 – God said, “I have given you every plant with seeds on the face of the earth and every tree that has fruit with seeds. This will be your food.”
But Eden didn’t last very long.
And as far as memory loss, and all that goes, many vegetarians don’t eat a balanced diet. There’s a lot of good brain foods, such as blueberries, and nuts. You have to eat a lot of protein, such as beans, several times a week, and soy products. Cheese is good, too. Just make sure it’s not processed. And a big variety of vegetables, and fruits and whole grains, and nuts. There’s a lot more than just wheat. It takes some effort, and cooking, but a vegetarian diet is the right way to eat.
Fish is good, though, for the Omega fatty acids.
