With winter in full swing, cold and flu season is officially upon us. YourHCG.com’s health coaches receive thousands of calls and chats each month not only about the HCG diet, but about ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We caught up with the Your HCG health coaches and they gave us their top preventative remedies. These remedies are the perfect companion to the hCG diet. Your HCG was quick to mention that anyone starting a new diet program, supplement or medication should consult their doctor first.

Echinacea – Echinacea is a wildflower native to North America. It can be found in both liquid and capsule form. When looking for echinacea, make sure you are checking the ingredients label for any added sugars or starches while on the hCG diet. Echinacea helps stimulate your body’s natural ability to heal itself. When looking at a liquid extract, you’ll want one that contains the whole plant. The root, leaves, flowers and seeds are all medicinal. You can start taking echinacea when you feel the onset of a cold to help combat it quickly.

Ginger – Ginger is a spicy, pungent root. In traditional Chinese medicine, ginger is believed to offer the possibility of averting the infection of a cold or flu. Ginger slightly raises the body temperature, which helps fight off viruses. This will help stop the virus from replicating. Ginger also has anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting properties, both of which boost your body’s defense. To use ginger, you may make a ginger tea by simmering a tablespoon of chopped ginger root for 10 minutes, straining and then adding a squeeze of lemon and stevia. Drink one cup three times a day for best results. Ginger also helps relieve or diminish nausea. It can be found in capsule form, but once again be careful with added ingredients. Using fresh ginger is more effective. Ginger is believed to offer many health benefits when it comes to arthritis, nausea, motion sickness and more.

Elderberry – Elderberry is a wild berry that has been proven to fight the flu. If wanting to use elderberry for your cold or flu, please wait to use this option until maintenance. This berry is delicious and helps raise your body temperature to fight the virus in your body. You can use the berries and the flowers because they are both medicinal. A great way to use this is to make a tea. This ensures you get the full benefits of the Elderberry. You can do this by taking 1/2 – 1 tsp of the dried flowers, and steep in 1 cup of hot water for 10-15 minutes. Drink this up to three times per day.

Garlic – Garlic is a bulb linked to the onion family. Garlic has many health benefits including fighting the common cold. When chopped, chewed or crushed, it forms an anti-bacterial compound called allicin. As soon as you feel a cold coming on, garlic is a great product to use to stop it from progressing. There are a few different ways to get the benefits of garlic. One is you will take a clove of crushed garlic, and let it sit for about 10 minutes, then swallow it. If you are on maintenance, you can put the garlic in a spoonful of natural peanut butter to make it go down smoother. There are also garlic supplements that are very effective. Just make sure you check the ingredients for any added ingredients that are not hCG diet friendly.

Licorice – Licorice is a deep-rooted coarse plant. This remedy is best used during maintenance. If you chose to use it during your low calorie diet and your weight loss slows down, discontinue use. Licorice has anti-viral properties, it can be used as an anti-inflammatory, sooth the body’s tissues and it is great for sore throats. The best way to use licorice would be in tea form. Most licorice teas will be mixed with other teas because it has such a strong flavor. Drink 3 cups of licorice tea per day to help relieve the above symptoms.

Vitamin C – Vitamin C is a vitamin found in many fruits and veggies. It is a water-soluble vitamin. Vitamin C is used for a lot of ailments. A few are anemia, bronchitis, common cold & sore throat, glaucoma, and much more. For a common cold it is recommended to take 1,000 milligrams daily starting at the first sign of cold or flu. If you wouldn’t like to take a supplement, there are a lot of vitamin C rich foods out there. The ones that are hCG diet friendly will be strawberries, oranges, grapefruit, tomatoes, cabbage, and leafy greens
